Sweet William is a small, independent studio based in Greenwich, London. Established in 2009 by Emma Wood, who decided that after 10 years of working in the City looking after lawyers it was time for a change.
So she sold her car, her house and left her job all in the same month to pursue a childhood love of pottery.
After investing in a kiln, some stock (far more than was strictly necessary) and countless ceramic courses, she practised day and night from her kitchen table to perfect her glazing, painting and firing techniques.
Designs were tested on friends and family and the loyal shoppers of Greenwich market. Her dearest friend Michelle makes the ultimate sacrifice, braving the 5am starts to join in the "roll up, roll up" banter. Together they have seen what people like, what makes them smile and what sells. And the result is the collection you see on this site.
As demand increased the two Sweet William kilns, despite working day and night, were unable to keep up with the orders. So the majority of the production was moved to a beautiful factory in Stoke-on-Trent in the heart of the Potteries. Here the ceramics continue to be made by hand with the same love and care.
The key criteria for all Sweet William ceramics is that they are fun, warm your heart and have a nostalgic feel. But most importantly that they will be used and not left on a shelf looking pretty, collecting dust. Pieces which after years of enjoyment, battered and chipped will be treasured even more.
